The Ideal Counsellor:

You might not know it but many counsellors also have to go through therapy as part of their training (I know I certainly did). That means I've been where you are, trying to find the "ideal" counsellor for me.
Here's what I wanted from a counsellor:
Someone who made me feel listened too.
A safe space to be myself.
A warm, calming presence- I didn't want to be told what to do or challenged too much.
These things were very important to me and it took a bit of trial and error before I found the right person (I suppose it's a bit like dating).
Other things I had to consider were how the sessions took place (it was covid so most counsellors were working online at the time), the timing of the sessions (I needed to work around school hours) and of course the cost involved (as a student I was able to find a counsellor who offered reduced rates).
So how do you find the right person? Do your research!
Platforms such as counselling directory or the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy have directories where you can search for counsellors in your area. Many counsellors (including myself) offer a free introductory call where we can assess if we'd work well together- get in touch with me using the contact form if you'd like to book.
Finally, remember that it doesn't have to be forever. It's okay to change your mind about who or what you want in your counselling journey.
